Welcome
Founded in 1977, the Medical Imaging & Radiation Therapy Technology Board of Examiners is dedicated to safeguarding the health, safety, and well-being of West Virginia residents. It achieves this by licensing professionals who use ionizing radiation in medical imaging and radiation therapy. The Board establishes licensure standards statewide and serves as the regulatory authority to ensure compliance with its rules and guidelines. Comprising nine members appointed by the Governor, the Board operates independently and is fully financially self-sustaining, without reliance on taxpayer funding. The Board's Mission is to be the driving force behind the highest quality imaging and radiation safety standards in West Virginia through the licensure of educationally prepared and clinically competent professionals. The Board's Vision is to ensure public safety through a highly skilled and qualified workforce across the entire state of West Virginia providing quality imaging and radiation therapy services in every community and clinical setting.
Diagnostic radiation is an effective tool that can save lives if used correctly. A high dose of radiation can be damaging, but conversely, under exposure to radiation can lead to misdiagnosis. It is a dangerous and potentially deadly precedent to allow personnel who have not undergone rigorous training in radiation safety, radiation physics, radiation exposure technique, anatomy, and patient positioning to assume medical imaging responsibilities. A radiologic procedure is only as effective as the person performing it. To be clinically useful, radiologic procedures must meet a high standard of quality. Accurate diagnosis is virtually impossible without quality medical imaging information.
West Virginia Code §30-23-1 authorizes the Board to regulate the following licenses:
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) License
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Apprentice License
- Nuclear Medicine License
- Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic CT License
- Nuclear Medicine and Non-Diagnostic CT License
- Nuclear Medicine Apprentice License
- Podiatric Medical Assistant Permit
- Radiation Therapy License
- Radiography License
- Temporary Nuclear Medicine License
- Temporary Radiography License
- Temporary Radiation Therapy License
